Flora Niche is South Africa's Oldest, Most Trusted Online Florist
From humble beginnings in Cape Town in 1983, our 39 years of floral design experience has allowed Flora Niche to grow and achieve the national footprint that it has now.
Annike McClarty was introduced to the florist industry from a young age through her mother Bessie van Zyl who owned a bridal shop for 55 years. Flowers were a big part of Bessie's life as she created bridal bouquets, wedding flowers and flower art for competitions. Annike's passion for flowers was developed early on in her childhood, through watching her mother, and she started making her own flower arrangements at the age of 6.
Annike worked as a secretary when she left school and saved up enough money to open her very own florist shop at the age of 23. The shop was opened in Claremont on 7 April 1983 and Annike named it Flora Niche. This original florist shop is still open today but things are a bit different now than they were back then.
It is no longer necessary to display flowers in the window as all our customers now order flowers online.
Same Day Flower Delivery Nationwide
Back in 1983 when
Flora Niche first opened its doors, Annike's father lent her the money to buy a
Ford Escort panel van for R450. Working alone, Annike would close the shop
every time she needed to make a delivery in Cape Town and would take her dog
Bambi along for the ride. The locals in the area soon grew fond of Bambi and
started getting to know Annike and her flower arrangements well. These locals
then began offering to keep the shop open while Annike completed her
deliveries, ensuring that her customers were helped when they needed to buy
flowers.
Flora Niche
remained a "one woman shop" for the next 10 years until Annike was able to
employ her first staff member. George continued to work for Flora Niche for
over 15 years.
In 2003 the
opportunities that an online ordering system offered caught Annike's attention
when she met with an IT specialist. This is when Flora Niche's online flower
ordering and payment system first became available. At the time, it was the
only South African florist that offered online flower ordering and nationwide
deliveries.

A Little More Flora Niche History
Bessie van Zyl was well known in the flower industry during the time that she ran her bridal shop. She also taught floristry and was a qualified flower judge. Bessie entered the World Floral Art competition once and won first prize. This is where Annike's passion for flowers developed from and she began entering flower competitions from a young age, developing her floral skills until she eventually opened Flora Niche at the age of 23.
